California Condor Recovery Program
California Condors Released in Grand Canyon Region
http://www.peregrinefund.org/vermil.html
"...an example of successful cooperation between private and public interests
in the effort to save our largest flying bird from extinction. Once ranging
over most of North America, by the early 1980s the California Condor population
had been reduced to only seven birds left in the wild, none of which were
breeding pairs. Today, through an innovative captive breeding program, the
population has grown to nearly 150, with 38 of these majestic birds now soaring
free over isolated wilderness areas in California and Arizona. Their survival
now depends on our willingness to preserve the wild places that remain."
